Welcome to Es Muss Sein!
- 'It Must Be!'
Named after what Beethoven wrote on one of his late quartet scores, Es Muss Sein! is a week-long summer course for string players who love chamber music.
Meeting each August at a beautiful countryside venue, students and teachers meet to play and rehearse together, also performing in concerts for each other and for neighbors from the surrounding area. Performances range from informal ‘picnic’ concerts outside to late evening ‘play-throughs’, to a final concert for friends, family, and all the participants.
Alongside the chamber music there are other activities that together give Es Muss Sein! the fun and positive atmosphere that brings students back from year to year. At past courses these have ranged from improvising live music for film projections and learning African drumming rhythms arranged for stringed instruments to T-shirt making and cookery. Each year the extra activities are different, making every course unique. With coaching during the day, evenings are reserved for sight-reading through other chamber music from the music library, and for other specially-planned events.
Es Muss Sein! has a positive and supportive atmosphere, where what binds staff and students alike is a passion for music: It Must Be!
